Ho Chi Minh City will implement a household waste collection fee based on weight

According to Decision No. 67/2025/QĐ-UBND, starting from June 1, 2025, Ho Chi Minh City will implement a household waste collection fee based on weight (kg).
This is a significant step toward promoting waste segregation at source and raising public awareness about environmental protection.

  • Currently, Ho Chi Minh City generates over 9,500 tons of household waste per day, most of which is not sorted.
  • Treating mixed waste is costly, pollutes the environment, and wastes resources that could otherwise be recycled or reused.
  • The Law on Environmental Protection 2020 clearly requires waste to be sorted at source into three categories:
    ✅ Recyclable waste
    ✅ Organic waste
    ✅ Other waste

CITIZENS – What can you do to save money and live green?

  1. Sort your waste at home
  • Use three separate bins or bags for recyclables, organics, and other waste.
  • Clean paper and plastic should be kept separately to sell to collectors or send to recycling systems.
  1. Reduce organic waste through home recycling
  • Use a compost bin or a food waste recycling machine to turn vegetable peels and leftovers into fertilizer.
  1. Minimize waste at the source
  • Choose products with no plastic packaging, bring your own bags, and reuse old items.
  • Limit leftover food, especially bones and oily food – they are harder to recycle and treat.

BUSINESSES – How to reduce waste-related costs?

  1. Measure – Manage waste by department
  • Set green KPIs: less waste = lower costs.
  • Clearly label office bins: recyclables, organics, and other waste.
  1. Adopt sorting and recycling technology
  • Use organic waste recycling machines, especially in restaurants, canteens, and hotels.
  • Provide specific and professional guidelines for sorting and recycling in buildings and offices.
  1. Internal training and communication
  • Each employee is an “eco warrior” – starting from their own desk.
  • Organize waste-sorting competitions or campaigns to raise awareness and strengthen team engagement.
